OUR equipmenT
Rods/Reels: The majority of fishing will be done on 8 weight 9 foot fly rods with the occasional 7 weight for added excitement. The 8 weight is the best all around rod for the main target fish such as redfish, speckled trout, sheepshead, drum and flounder. For other target fish at certain times of the year such as tarpon, king mackerel, jack crevalle and snook we suggest larger rod weights between 9 and 12. 9-10 weights will be great for larger bull reds, jacks, and snook. The larger fish such as tarpon and kings will require a larger weight fly rod such as an 11 or 12 weight. We can provide all required equipment, but obviously do not mind clients bringing their own gear they are already comfortable with.
Our gear includes rods by R.L. Winston, and Scott and reels from Hatch, Abel and Waterworks Lamson. We can also provide quality light tackle conventional set ups including baitcasting and spinning rods.
Fly Lines/Leader/Tippet: The majority of my fishing is sight fishing in shallow water which typically requires a tropical floating line with an average (10-12 ft) fluorocarbon leader of 10-12 lbs. When fishing the channel or jetties, the deeper water will require sinking or intermediate lines on the larger weighted fly rods. In this deeper water we we will be using larger diameter leaders and tippet. We can provide all necessary leaders, and tippet material, but definitely does not hurt to bring your own for back ups.
Flies: You are not required to bring your own flies as we will always have enough current flies to get us through the day, but feel free to bring some confidence flies of your own at any point. We are always open to trying new patterns as it’s always a changing game.
